Hillcrest golfer nabs second at champs
Grant Olivier, a hillcrest resident, came second against 200 other amateur golfers in the 19th Amateur World Golfers Championship recently.
DREAMS of competing like a ‘pro’ golfer and raising the winning trophy in the 19th Amateur World Golfers’ Championship came true for Hillcrest golfer, Grant Olivier, when Team South Africa delivered on their promise to secure a historical win for South Africa at the World Golfers’ Championship.
In the individual flightings, Grant also finished in a proud second place in the A Division and returned home with a trophy tucked under each arm.
“I really enjoyed competing against different countries and made many new friends from different parts of the world. The golf was competitive and the whole tournament was professionally managed,” said Grant.
Founded by the late sporting icon, Sven Tumba and supported by the patronage of world-class golfers, Arnold Palmer, the late Severiano Ballesteros and Annika Sorenstam, World Golfers’ Championship is the world’s largest amateur golf tournament that gives amateurs the unique opportunity of experiencing the thrill of competing as a professional against competitors from all over the world.
More than 200 golfers from 26 countries competed across four of KZN’s championship courses – Cotswold Downs Country Club, Durban Country Club, Umhlali Country Club and Prince’s Grant Golf Estate – from 26 October to 2 November.
