A WESTVILLE baseball little league club, known as the Westville Dragons, is encouraging youth to join the club.
Currently, the league trains three teams, an U9, U12 and U15 team, but all ages up to 18-years are welcome to join.
“We don’t have many high school pupils interested in joining the club, because most high schools do not acknowledge the sport and it becomes difficult for the pupils to play both baseball and the sports that the high schools encourage.
”We therefore teach the little ones as soon as they are able to play, so they can enjoy the sport as long as they can,” said Dale O’Brien, the league’s chairman.
According to Bruce Jackson, the U9 coach, the league is primarily about having fun, but the league members are also taught basic baseball techniques and take part in regular matches.
The league practices on Tuesday at 5pm and Thursdays at 6.30pm at the Westville Old Boys’ Sports Club.
A friendly match is held every Sunday (usually at Hoy Park in Durban).
Gareth Scott, an ex-Springbok baseball and softball coach, is coaching the U12 team.
