St Mary’s pupils paddle for CHOC

St Mary's DSG will be raising funds for CHOC by competing in the Dusi.

ST Mary’s DSG team have signed up to raise funds for CHOC (Childhood Haemotology Oncology Clinics), by participating in the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon which commences on Thursday and finishes at Blue Lagoon on Saturday.

The team consist of St Mary’s pupils Lauren Varty, Chantal Botha and Sarah Cluver (deputy headgirl), two teachers, Nicky Simpson and Gail Main.

Sarah will be paddling with her dad, Guy Cluver and Chantal joins her dad Marco Botha, and Nicky and Gail team up, all in doubles. The girls’ original fundraising initiative thus far includes, Guy Cluver from Bellevue cafe donating R5 to CHOC for every milkshake bought by a St Mary’s girl in uniform.

Manley, the school headmaster, was put to the test in a canoe down Ernie Pierce Weir and the adventure was filmed. The video was shown at school, up to the critical moment of reaching the bottom. Pupils then paid R5 and guessed whether Manley remained in the canoe, or capsized. The end of the video will be shown in assembly on Friday and a winner will be announced.

Their Dusi boats are being signed on the bottom by fellow pupils at the school for R5, so that the girls’ support can go down the river with the brave attempting the Dusi. If 200 signatures are collected in a week, Simpson and Mann will join the school running club and run through the streets of Kloof carrying the boat for the afternoon.

Pupils also had the opportunity to water bomb Sarah and the head of high school sport, Grant Price while they were in the school pool at a cost of R5.
