Molweni to host SA’s top trail runners

Register now to take part in the inaugural Molweni Trail run this weekend.

SOUTH Africa’s top trail runners are arriving in Durban to take part in the inaugural Molweni Trail Run on 3 and 4 May.

Based out of Forest Hills Sports Club and traversing the Kranztkloof Nature Reserve, and the newly formed Molweni River Community Park, the athletes will be put through their paces over challenging terrain and tough climbs, covering 32km.

The recent Two Oceans Trail Run winner, Thabang Madiba, was brought in by event sponsors Salomon, to take part in the race. Set to test Madiba will be a Johannesburg based athlete, Lucky Miya, who recently won the tough Ingeli Skymarathon (42km). On current form, this would make Miya the race favourite however the result on the day will come from the athlete who is able to pace themselves best over the route.

Race director, Graham Daniel, advised all athletes to be cautious in the initial kilometres as the three major climbs in the race will sap athletes’ strength. “The winner will need a good pacing strategy and course knowledge may play a role in determining the winner. The strong climbers will have an advantage though, given the steepness of the climbs,” said Daniel.

There are entries available online at www.molwenitrailrun.co.za. Entries are limited to 250 based on the stipulations of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. There will be other events taking place that weekend, such as the Mini-Molweni for children. Spectators are welcome.
