One win each for Kearsney and Glenwood

Kearsney won the basketball match, but lost the cricket game against Glenwood.

KEARSNEY College and Glenwood Boys’ High School faced off in a cricket and basketball showdown at the weekend.

Kearsney travelled to Glenwood for its third match of the season and while the team was quietly confident, Glenwood had other plans – having played well against Michaelhouse the previous week and having the home court advantage.

Kearsney drew first blood but were on the back foot from that point on with the wind howling across the court, negating the outside shooting. Glenwood camped in a tight zone and out-muscled the lighter Kearsney team which had difficulty scoring inside the key.

The Kearsney boys fought back to lead the game by four points in the final minutes of the game, only to see the lead evaporate as two quick turnovers and scores by Glenwood brought them back on level pegging.

Kearsney played good defence and were able to score from the last two positions of the game to win. The visiting Kearsney team fought hard under brutal conditions and showed great character to fight for the win. Kearsney won 34-30.

In cricket news, Kearsney’s 1st XI cricket team just failed in their quest to chase down a very sizeable total posted by Glenwood. A full round of cricket fixtures were evenly contested between the two schools, with honours fairly evenly divided. Glenwood 1st X1 scored 251. Kearsney 1st X1 scored 225 (T Tedder 71, Foss 41). Kearsney lost by 26 runs.

Kearsney’s U16A side enjoyed a good win over their 16A opponents – the first ever defeat for the Glenwood side since they started out at the U14 age level.

In soccer news, the following boys from Kearsney College have been selected for the various KZN soccer age teams which will travel to Gauteng during October. Thomas Host made the KZN U19 team, Keenan Naidoo, Tseko Mphakathi and Muki Memela and the U15 team, and Kandrin Naidoo and Mzuvumile Phike made the U14 team.

During the season the following players were selected for Highway teams – Connor Heycocks, Thomas Host and Trystan Tanner made the U19 team, Ross Taylor, Kuhle Bophela, Daniel Cherry, Mukelwe Memela, Keenan Naidoo and Tseko Mphakathi made the U15 team and Gninathina Gumede, Kandrin Naidoo and Mzuvumile Phike made the U14 team.
