Mariannridge soccer stars compete on the field

Mariannridge soccer tournament a success.

AFTER several weeks of planning, the Mariannridge community was set ablaze with local talent last Saturday when MASA (Mariannridge Action Sports Association) hosted a 4-a-side action soccer tournament. The games were started after a moment of silence was observed in honour of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana player, Senzo Meyiwa, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

The tournament drew a crowd which included both the young and old, men and women. The junior group finals ended in a penalty shootout, with “Shooting Stars” taking the 11-15yrs group title, where they beat Saville United FC, 3-2. After a nail biting penalty shootout, City FC pinned the ball in the back of the nets to clench a 3-2 victory over CLB’s. The final game of the day saw an electrifying playoff between the Young Gunners verse Ungasab. The victors, Young Gunners bolted the final strike into the back of the nets of Ungasab to take the victory of 2-0. Prizes were awarded to Lunga and the Blax for team spirit; CLB’s for “Early Bird” registration and the player of the tournament went to Ingram from Ungasab. Top goal keeper from the junior groups was Tamie (Golden Saville FC) and the senior groups, Roman (Rainbow United).

Secretary of MASA, Bernita van der Byl said the association would like to thank all the sponsors for their generous donations of a range of products and services rendered. “Thank you for helping us build into the lives of these young sporting stars.

“And finally, to the volunteers from the community, for their hard work, commitment and dedication. Thank you for your perseverance with the planning of this tournament. Our goal and hope, is that MASA together with its partners, will continue to develop the sporting community of Mariannridge at large,” she said.
