MORE than 2 000 spectators gathered in the underground parking lot at Watercrest Mall to watch 55 top lifters from around the country competing for top honours in the Iron Gladiators competition.

The event, hosted by Waterfall-based Highway Iron Power Lifting Club, saw a number of South African and unofficial world records tumble as lifters pushed themselves to the limits. Top positions went to Waldo Preston – best deadlift, Tristen ‘O Brien – best overall male lifter, Diego Cardonna – best bench press and Carla Goss – best female lifter.

The event saw fans being treated to feats of extra ordinary strength from some of the country’s top power lifters and strong men. The atmosphere was full of energy, which added fuel to the competitors.
