Cyclists cycle through Westville during MrP Foundation ride

“The ride went exactly to plan; the heat didn’t prove too much of a challenge and they all made it through successfully."

FORTY seasoned cyclists riding in the sixth annual Ride for MRP Foundation rode through Westville, on Monday, 30 November on day two of the ride from Johannesburg to Durban.

They started day two in Ladysmith at 4am and finished in Durban at 4pm. Touted as one of SA’s toughest two-day cycle rides, the Ride for MRP Foundation starts in Johannesburg with a night stopover in Ladysmith and a total distance of 660km.

The sole purpose of the ride is to raise funds and awareness for the MRP Foundation and to date, the cyclists have raised over R500 000 for the non-profit organisation, with this year’s event raising over R300 000.

Day one pushed the cyclists’ mental and physical limits as they tackled some big climbs on the journey from Johannesburg to Ladysmith, covering 370km in just 14 hours.

Kelvin du Sart, chairman of the Westville Cycle Club and visionary and organiser behind the ride, was impressed by both the riders’ camaraderie and the ride itself.

“The ride went exactly to plan; the heat didn’t prove too much of a challenge and they all made it through successfully. And of course, a big thanks to the assistant and support team who followed them the whole way.”

The MRP Foundation is all about ordinary people doing extraordinary things, something sixth-time rider, Craig Jones, financial manager at the Mr Price Group, knows all about. Wearing a yellow jersey, he was still feeling strong at the finish and was really impressed with everyone who took part, saying,

“The Ride for MRP Foundation is about an amazing bunch of guys doing amazing things for an amazing cause.”

The MRP Foundation thanked its sponsors and partners: Borwood, CC Gallery, Absa, Defy, Hoopers, MRP Sport, Hirt and Carter, MRP Sport, MRP Home, IG Hoosen, SPAR and MEG.
