Judo star needs funding
Jasmine Martin was chosen to go to the USA recently, but she was left out due to the lack of funding.
FIFTEEN year old Jasmine Martin won the under 18 and under 21 National Judo Trials in Durban on Friday, 5 February.
The Werda Skool pupil will be awarded Protea colours by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and will compete in Port Elizabeth in April in the World Judo Commonwealth Championships and Africa Championships. However, all this will be possible through funding which she needs.
Martin’s father, Warren said any donation in kind will be appreciated. “We need to raise accommodation and travel costs, entry fees, and R500 for the tracksuit. She also needs two fighting suits which follows the international norms for 2016, white and blue, which cost about R3 000 each,” said Warren. Martin was chosen to go to the USA recently, but she was left out due to the lack of funding.
Coach, Johan Duckworth, said Martin is a determined judoka and stands a good chance of winning the championships this year. “Jasmine had put in a lot of time and effort into her preparation for this event, training every day for the last three and a half months, putting in an average of 4 to 6 hours a day. As her coach, I am very proud of her achievement and I know that she will only work harder now in preparation for the Commonwealth championships. If there is anyone willing to assist with sponsorship for Jasmine to help her get to achieving her goals. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. For more information or donations please contact johanduckworth@gmail.com,” said Duckworth.
