Triple win for Westville Old Boys’ club

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams took on the Harlequins in their matches last week and won each game.

IN KZN club rugby rarity, all three teams from WOB and Harlequins played against each other in the same week.

The first of the games kicked off last Thursday as the 3rd sides battled it out, setting the tone for the other matches.

The first half was a tightly fought affair and the big harlequins pack looked to show dominance upfront.

They ran into a courageous WOB side which repelled everything that was thrown at them.

Once the game slowed down, WOB gained possession of the ball and used their running rugby training to their advantage.

With a few tired and weary bodies going into half time the host lead with 13 – 0.

As the second half progressed the fitness of the WOB side proved superior and allowed them to eventually run out with a 34 – 5 win.

Looking to build on the momentum from the previous evening, the WOB 2nd team took to the field in front of a packed home crowd.

The early exchanges were bruising and a few injuries early on created a stop-start affair. Some ill-discipline cost WOB their first yellow card and then conceding a few kickable penalties.

The WOB team stuck to their structure and Mikey Ellion burrowed through the ruck to clinch a bonus point try.

Great performances were seen from Cameron Chiocchetti and powerful lock Kyle Mudgeway, who helped WOB win with a final score of 20 – 9.

The 1st XV teams put their hearts into the game and had supporters on the edge of their seats.

Harlequins crossed the line with four minutes remaining and it looked as if the game was dead and buried but the WOB team created one more opportunity.

This allowed back line man of the match, Keegan Paverd, to cross over in the corner with only two minutes remaining.

After a monumental performance from lock, Kyle Mickleburgh, for the full 80 he still pushed in one more 60m run down field but ended up isolated.

A big hit in the midfield forced the ball forward and that was the end of the game worthy of humdinger status. WOB hung on for a 27 – 26 victory.
