Student is in the swim for gold

MARTIN Binedell, a second year IIE BCom student at Varsity College Westville Campus, managed to balance his academics while focusing on his swimming, obtaining distinctions for most of his modules.

He has always looked up to and found his inspiration from older swimmers around him, such as Darien Townsend, George Du Rand and Roland Shoeman who also sparked his love for the sport at an early age.

With swimmers like Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Burgh as seniors in the South Africa team, Martin has great mentors to look up to.

“I guess the best thing I can say is do not follow the crowd. In sports and in life, there is no substitute for hard work. The majority of people are not prepared to put in the hours to achieve their goals. Be the one to take the path less travelled, put in the work and never give up,” said Martin.
