Hillcrest Villagers’ teams on a win streak
The Hillcrest Villagers' Rugby Club continued to rake in victories, even among its youth teams.
THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ 1st and 2nd XV teams won their encounter against their KZNRU First Division rivals, the Jaguars Rugby Club, at the Durban Shongweni Club on Friday evening.
In the 2nd XV match, the home side showed their sheer class, with a comprehensive 46 – 10 drubbing. Man of the Match went to Nicholas Tyler (forwards) and Joshua Courtney (backline)
The 1st XV match provided head coach, Mike de Kock,with reaassurance as his squad truly delivered their full potential. The Villagers’ outfit played to a patient, disciplined and structured game plan.
While the first half was separated by a close margin, Hillcrest produced a top class performance from beginning to end, with a 56 – 6 demolition job. Man of the Match went to Liam Bowmaker-Wood (forwards) and Tyron Brand (backline).

The Envirosan/Turaco Energy Hillcrest Villagers 3rd XV hosted Reservoir Hills Rhinos on Thursday evening. This was a great start for their first league fixture as they beat the Rhinos 36 – 7.
Rhinos put Villagers under a lot of pressure in the first 20 minutes but the defence held out and the Crest’s pack gradually started to dominate.
Two tries from Ruben Goosen saw the Crest lead 10 – 0 at half time. Rhinos battled hard throughout the second half but further tries from Kyle Spowart, Ryan Hartmans gruber and a third from Goosen, with two conversions from Clifton Bridge, saw the lead extended to 29 – 0.
The Rhinos’ backline finally breached the hard working defence to score an excellent try.
The last few minutes saw a further score from captain Brian Lewis, converted by Bridge to seal a win. Man of the match went to Ruben Goosen and Kyle Spowart.
Next Thursday the Envirosan/Turaco Energy Hillcrest Villagers 3rds will travel to Queensburgh for their next league fixture. The Land Rover Durban Hillcrest Villagers 1st and 2nd XV will tackle the Ballito Dolphins on Thursday, 18 April from 7pm at the Durban Shongweni Club.
The success continued to pour in for the club as the Build It Pinetown Hillcrest Villagers’ Youth Rugby Club competed in the Pietermaritzburg Juniors’ tournament on Sunday.
The club’s chairman, Natascha Kretzel, said she was proud of each of the junior boys as they showed massive heart.
“All such gentlemen, on and off the field, and to our parents, we are so blessed to have such well-mannered, incredible people in the Villagers’ family,” she said.
