Hill claims podium finish

HIGHWAY’S Andrew Hill claimed second place in the mountain bike race at the Illovo Wartburg MTB Classic and Trail Run event, the opener for this year’s Quattro ROAG Series.

Tyronne, Stuart and Andrew, all previous champions of the Quattro ROAG Series, were the early protagonists in the mountain bike event. Their early battle was a continuation of the final few races of 2019 when the three were the dominant force in men’s marathon racing in the province.

It seemed as if Tyronne gained an early advantage when he opted for a different line in one of the early dual single track sections.

Stuart and Andrew’s mistake meant they had to work a bit harder early on. When only about 15km of the 62km race remained, Stuart made a decisive split from Tyronne.

Andrew lasted a bit longer, but had to settle for second as Stuart powered away over the closing kilometres.

In the men’s trail run, Linda Zondi claimed a two-minute victory against Wiseman Vezi.

The women stamped their authority on this year’s competition as the defending champions, Christie Hearder and Sarah Gray, claimed early victories in their respective opening events.

Christie emerged as the comfortable winner in the women’s mountain bike race while Sarah had to work a bit harder before she claimed a win against Apiwe Gaga in the trail run.

Christie finished with a massive 19-minute win against Nadine Nunes. Sarah Gray claimed a two-and-a-half-minute lead in the first race.
