COMMUTERS driving along Inanda Road in Hillcrest were horrified when a car caught on fire and exploded at approximately 5pm on Wednesday.
The vehicle was travelling towards Hillcrest when it caught alight. The driver pulled the vehicle to the side of the road, near Hillside Church, and the car subsequently exploded.
Steven King of Waterfall Community Crime Watch and Secure Link, reported that the blaze completely destroyed the vehicle.
“The vehicle is completely in ruin and it is just a burnt out shell. It is suspected that either the battery or the fuel tank exploded,” said King.
According to Derick Banks, of ER24, no one was injured in the incident.
“The traffic was severely affected. Metro police were on scene and the Fire Department managed to douse the flames,” said Banks.
Lt France Mkhize, of the Hillcrest SAPS, said that the incident was not reported to the SAPS for investigation. The exact cause of the accident is still unknown, but reports suggest that the incident was caused by an electrical fault.
