Varsity College learners take part in awareness campaign

IIE's Varsity College took part in a beach clean up as part of their student services.

THE IIE’s Varsity College in Westville has embarked on a mission to help improve the environment. As part of the college’s student services campaign, this month’s campaign is about taking care of the environment, and the theme saw 13 staff members and student volunteers collect 27 bags of rubbish at Durban’s North Beach.

Zanele Ntombela, the student wellness manager at Varsity College, said the student centre is an extra-curriculum that is outside of their academic activities.
“This programme is aimed at teaching the learners to be good and responsible citizens. We do this through awareness campaigns that involve community engagements. We have different themes for each month, and this month’s theme is environmental awareness, hence the beach clean-up.
“For many of the students, it was their first time participating in a beach clean-up, and the initiative was an eye opener. It was also rewarding as students became a bit more environmentally aware through the experience,” she said.

Ntombela said their awareness campaign this month will continue as they will be planting trees and learning more about recycling.
