Barbara Patrick of the SPCA emphasised the importance of vaccination. “Rabies is fatal, and the threat of it should not be taken lightly. There has been a drastic increase in the number of positive cases in KwaZulu-Natal, and we urge all pet owners to ensure that their pets are vaccinated against rabies. It is a legal requirement to ensure that this is done. There is no cure once the rabies virus is contracted. Rabies vaccinations need to be done annually to ensure the vaccine remains effective and thereby not only protects your four-legged companions but also your immediate family and community,” she said.
The SPCA encouraged owners to bring an existing vaccination history if they have it, but vaccination certificates will be provided if they do not. Please ensure that all dogs are on leads and that all cats are contained in secure baskets or cat cages when bringing them to the Rabies Vaccination Clinic.
