St Mary’s to defend grand finals title on home turf
This is the first year in the history of the Grand Finals that all the reigning champions have made a prior appearance.
ST Mary’s DSG will welcome the province’s top 10 regional hockey champions to its turf for the Grand Finals this weekend, bringing together the best teams from across KZN after 10 regional tournaments involving 34 schools.
As hosts and defending champions, St Mary’s will aim to secure an eighth Grand Finals title, further cementing their status as the competition’s most successful team since its inception in 2011. Representing the Highway region, the home side will also make their 13th appearance at the Grand Finals, alongside Durban Girls’ College, making them the tournament’s most experienced competitors.

This year’s event is particularly significant as, for the first time, all 10 reigning regional champions have previously qualified for the Grand Finals, promising another fiercely contested tournament.
St Mary’s have been drawn in Pool A, where they will face St John’s DSG, Ferrum High School, St Patrick’s College and Amanzimtoti High School. Pool B features St Anne’s Diocesan College, Durban Girls’ College, Our Lady of Fatima, Grantleigh School and Wartburg Kirchdorf School.
Among the challengers are familiar rivals, including St Anne’s Diocesan College and Durban Girls’College, both former champions, as well as St John’s DSG, who finished runners-up last year and will look to go one step further.
