Katlehong learners receive maths dictionaries
The dictionary is a proven tool that learners use to understand difficult maths terms and concepts.
One of Katlehong’s primary schools has risen far above others following its outstanding maths results, despite closures of schools and the disruption caused by the lockdowns.
On September 27, Sekgutlong Primary School was part of the My Maths Buddy Project (MMBP) where learners from Grade Three to Grade Six took part in workshops and each received a copy of the My Maths Buddy (MMB) dictionary, sponsored by CompAir.
The dictionary is a proven tool that learners use to understand difficult maths terms and concepts.
According to the administrator of the promotion for MMBP Zimkita Mabovula, the project is a South African Maths Foundation’s initiative, which aims to improve the understanding of mathematics terminology among maths teachers and learners.
The school’s principal, Olga Maja, confirmed that the dictionary has been a pivotal component to the rapid improvement of maths results in the school.

“Several learners that have used the MMB dictionary have gone on to get distinctions in mathematics in matric,” she stated.
“As I am nearing retirement, it gives me great pleasure to be certain that the standard of maths education at Sekgutlong will continue to improve beyond my departure.”
The project has been ongoing for several years and was completed through a working collaboration with CompAir.
CompAir attended the workshop to validate the learners and to ensure that each learner receives the MMB dictionary.
HR leader for CompAir SA Tozamile Qobo said in line with their company values, they think and act like owners of their business and communities they operate in.

“Education is fundamental to the development and growth of our country. CompAir SA has built a relationship with Sekgutlong Primary school since 2014,” Qobo added.
“Our business is on technology and innovation, so, naturally, we plough back to the communities that we operate in and foster education as a vehicle that will propel our learners to participate in the mainstream economy of our country,” said Qobo.
