IFP leadership speaks out after fatal Katlehong shooting

Two suspects were arrested as survivors urged further action, and police confirmed more arrests are expected in the ongoing investigation.

Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) Gauteng secretary Alco Ngobese, who is currently recovering in hospital, has praised police for their swift action in arresting two suspects following the fatal shooting of Gauteng IFP deputy chief whip Khethamabala Sithole.

Sithole was gunned down during the launch of an IFP branch at Buyafuthi Hostel in Katlehong on May 31.

Ngobese and fellow IFP member Sambulo Nxumalo were also injured during the ambush and rushed to separate hospitals. Tragically, Sithole died at the scene.

The two suspects were apprehended on June 2 in Katlehong and appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court on June 5.

They face charges of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. Their case has been postponed to June 12 for a formal bail application.

Speaking exclusively to Kathorus Mail, Ngobese recounted the terrifying incident.

“We were waiting for other IFP members outside the venue when unknown men approached and started firing random shots,” he said.

“I was hit, along with my comrade Nxumalo. Sithole sadly died on the spot. I survived by pretending to be dead when the gunmen returned to finish him off.”

While many may speculate on political motives, Ngobese does not believe the shooting was driven by internal party conflicts.

“I don’t think this was politically motivated. There are no disputes within the party,” he said.

Despite his injuries, Ngobese said he is relieved about the arrests but believes more individuals were involved.

“I’m grateful to the SAPS for their quick response. However, I’m convinced more people are involved, and I hope they will be arrested so we can uncover the full truth,” he said.

“I want to know who ordered the hit and why they killed my friend in cold blood.”

IFP Gauteng chairperson Bonginkosi Dhlamini also welcomed the arrests and expressed hope for justice.

“We’re relieved the suspects have been apprehended and have already appeared in court. We believe there is progress in the case and hope all involved in this senseless killing will be brought to justice,” Dhlamini said.

He added that the party is pleased that the two injured members are recovering well and praised the SAPS for their dedication.

“We commend the SAPS for their efforts and encourage them to apply the same commitment in helping all South Africans affected by crime,” he added.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Sithole family during this difficult time.”

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that three individuals were initially taken in for questioning on June 2.

“Two men, aged 30 and 32, were formally charged and detained. The third suspect was released. More arrests are expected as investigations continue,” he said, adding that the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwana confirmed the charges and reiterated that the case remains active.

“The suspects have been charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition, relating to the Katlehong shooting incident in which an IFP member was killed and two others were injured,” she said.

“As investigations are ongoing, we cannot rule out the possibility of additional suspects being added to the case.”
