Keeping up with the van der Walts: We take a tour of the family home
The mother of the house is in love with their open-plan kitchen that still invites her to participate in lounging activities as she prepares family meals while dad and the children watch television.
The van der Walts gave Express an exclusive tour of their three bedroom, three bath, open-plan kitchen and lounge home in Glen Marais as they expanded on their property values.
Natasha and Hannes said they have been living in their home for the past four years.

“It’s near the schools and is located in the middle of Laerskool Kruinsig and Hoërskool Kempton Park and close to all the shops. The children are very busy in school, so it’s convenient with all the up-and-down traveling,” Natasha explained.

Hannes said the area is a calm environment, before Natasha reiterated: “A lot of older folks live in this area and all of our friends are nearby.”
Hannes is confident his family is safe in the boomed-off zone.

“That’s the number one reason we bought the house, so there is a flow of interaction while we mind our own business,” she said.
What makes a house a home for Hannes is that each individual in their home feels safe and has a place to speak.
Listen:
“A place where they can be themselves is a home for me. Our pictures on all the walls and the furniture are all enhancing factors.”
The style owned by the van der Walts in their casa envisage clean lines, simple and light tones accompanied by the odd painted wall here and there.
Their home is a walkthrough photo album as the family is hung on portraits and canvas on every single wall.

Insurance is critical for any household and Hannes believes for an entry-level house owner, it’s important to start off by insuring house appliances and electronic devices.

“Theft, albeit the great threat in South Africa, one should also consider the danger of fires in which a family loses everything. We had a break-in a while back in which our laptops were stolen, which weren’t insured,” said Natasha.
They warn that lacking insurance is an expensive lesson to be learnt and advised to insure more and more as one’s affordability allows.

Natasha said: “Your cars should also be covered and important things like family heirloom jewellery – things you treasure most.”
As to the financial requisites when buying a home, Hannes said: “We were fortunate in putting down a big deposit from the previous property we had sold.”

Caxton Local Newspapers introduced five content categories to its websites and Express is unveiling each one through the lives of the Van der Walt family.
The content pillars are lifestyle, kids, motoring, property and finance. Last week the lifestyle category was unveiled where a dynamic and lovely lifestyle of the van der Walts was witnessed.
