Pekingese Rescue helps dogs find homes
The volunteers are currently looking after 60 dogs which need loving homes

PEKINGESE Rescue South Africa is a non-profit organisation and relies solely on fundraising and donations to save and re-home Pekingese.
The NGO grew out of the need to find adoptive homes for the increasing number of unwanted and abandoned Pekingese.
The volunteers, who are based all over Gauteng with volunteers also from Kempton Park, rescue and receive Pekingese from many locations, ranging from shelters and humane organisations to family pets regretfully given up by their caring owners for reasons beyond their control.
The condition and quality of the dogs they receive vary greatly from the neglected, abused and forgotten to the well-kept and much-loved family member.
However, all of the Pekes are carefully evaluated and provided with care in one of the organisation’s foster homes provided by each of the volunteers in their own homes. The goal is to keep the dogs in the volunteers’ homes temporarily while they ensure placement in a loving household with responsible owners which have been carefully selected based on the needs and habits of the individual dog.
All of the Pekes are groomed when turned-in, receive professional medical evaluation and attention and undergo any treatment necessary to lead a normal life. Next they are placed in competent foster homes where they are evaluated for habits, likes and dislikes.
Each Peke remains in its foster home until a suitable permanent home is located. Basic obedience and manners are taught when possible; and post adoption obedience training in some cases is recommended.
All Pekes are neutered or spayed before placement for adoption. Anyone wishing to adopt a Peke is also evaluated. The prospective adopter is required to complete an adoption application which then will be approved or rejected.
When approved, the prospective new owner is urged to meet the Peke to evaluate the behaviour of both Peke and owner. A home inspection will be done by a volunteer. The dogs are not sold, however, an adoption fee is requested to assist the volunteers to take care of the dogs who have not found homes.
The organisation’s first priority is to look after the dogs and ensure they find suitable homes. They find the task difficult when they also have to worry about their ever growing veterinary bills.
Each of the volunteers has to contribute from their own pockets to ensure that the organisation is not in the red with their respective veterinarian.
