DA warns Ekurhuleni residents about scam using councillor’s cellphone number
Residents are strongly cautioned to treat any unsolicited communication requesting money or personal information with extreme suspicion, regardless of whether it appears to come from a known or trusted contact.
The DA has warned residents of Ward 104 and the broader Ekurhuleni community about an emerging scam in which fraudsters are impersonating Alderman Tracey Lourenco’s cellphone number to target unsuspecting members of the public.
While investigations are still underway, the DA confirmed it has engaged Norkem Park SAPS, which is actively probing the matter to establish how the number is being used and to identify those responsible.

“It is important to note that scammers are increasingly impersonating public representatives, whose contact details are publicly available, in an attempt to lend credibility to their schemes,” said Lourenco.
“This represents a dangerous escalation in criminal activity targeting ordinary residents, and the DA calls on the community to remain vigilant.”
Residents have been urged to treat any unsolicited communication requesting money or personal information with extreme caution, even if it appears to come from a known or trusted contact.
The DA stressed that a councillor will never request personal or banking details from residents.
Community members are advised to verify any suspicious communication independently and to contact their bank and SAPS if they are unsure.

“These criminal syndicates are operating within our communities, and it is only through collective alertness and proactive action that residents can protect themselves and their neighbours from falling victim,” Lourenco said.
The DA said it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
