Round Table to brave cold for charity
The members of the organisation will be spending one night out in the cold in solidarity with those less fortunate
GENTLEMEN’S organisation Round Table will brave one night out in the cold weather on May 24 as part of its initiative to raise awareness of the everyday poor living conditions other less fortunate people have to go through.
This annual charity event, fittingly called Winter Knights, because of the cold winter weather, is once again coming together in aid of charity to keep warm and fed the less fortunate members of our community.
The event will be held at The Brazen Head Restaurant and Pub in Edenvale.
“Round Table South Africa annually convenes the Winter Knights project as a national initiative. During this project, supported by many corporates such as Toyota, we collect blankets and clothes for those who are less fortunate and in dire need of it,” Danie van Niekerk, secretary/IRO-PRO of Round Table Edenvale 63, said.
“We aim to not only collect as many resources as possible but also to raise awareness of the harsh winter that the exposed, less fortunate must endure.
During the night, between 6pm and midnight, the Round Table crew will collect clothes, food and blankets outside and spreading the awareness.
“And then, we will have somewhat of a ‘sleepover’, where for one night we brave the cold to sleep outside in the Brazen Head parking lot. We do this as a way of experiencing what thousands of homeless and less fortune people go through every winter, and what they continue to struggle with,” Rudolf van Rensburg, a member of Round Table, expressed.
Round Table is an association of young men, between the ages of 18 and 40, of different professions and cultural backgrounds, who are involved in charity work. The organisation is national and has various branches on the East Rand, including Benoni and Edenvale.
They have in the past collected hundreds of blankets and tinned food for deserving communities and shelters, including Bienvenu Shelter, AFM Bethesda Church, Feed SA and Family Africa.
Beneficiaries of the blankets and clothes collected for the night this year will include Compass Edenvale, Bienvenu Shelter, and many, smaller, independent charities.
