Tsogang Basadi Football Club celebrated Women’s Month with staff members of Spur at Festival Mall on Friday last week.

The team consists of elderly women from Tembisa and the surrounding areas. The elderly women spent time teaching residents about the importance of exercising.

Their coach and founder of the team, Mr Kenny Sithagu, said when he started the team some years ago, some of the women complained about back aches while others had high blood pressure.

“But after a few months, they started feeling better and can now play for 90 minutes with no problems at all,” he said.

When asked why he chose to celebrate and honour Women’s Day with the elderly women, the manager of Spur Festival Mall, Mr Peet Van der Waal, said they always celebrate Women’s Day with those who are doing extraordinary things in the community.

“It is also part and parcel of our social responsibility programme. We plough back into the communities that support us throughout the year. I also feel honoured to have spent time with such women, who against all odds, are still playing football and inspiring the youth to participate in sporting activities at their age,” he said.

The elderly women later showed the youngsters from Spur that they are not only good at playing football, they are also good on the dance floor.
