DA to conduct door to door visits in Birch Acres
Residents would also be advised on the importance of knowing their neighbours, and the role it plays in preventing crime
THE ward 13 branch of the DA will conduct door to door visits in Birch Acres to spread awareness on crime prevention strategies on Saturday from 9am until noon.
An information table will also be put up at the Spar shopping centre on Kwartel Road.
According to Allan Sauls, DA PR councillor for the ward, crime levels have been an ongoing issue in the suburb and the campaign will focus on sharing crime prevention information.
Included in the list is the negative effect not reporting crime has on preventing it.
“Concerns have been raised that crime is not always reported to the police. Not reporting crime leaves the force with inaccurate statistics on the actual crime levels,” Sauls explained.
“Community policing forums are another way of preventing crime. Currently Birch Acres does not have a constituted forum.”
During the visits residents will also be advised on the importance of knowing their neighbours and the role it plays in preventing crime.
Street Whatsapp groups would also be promoted, as many people these days have access to smart phones.
Finally, the local sector vehicle is a crucial part of crime prevention and Sauls stressed that residents should call their number every time they take note of something suspicious.
It is imperative that people use the Norkem Park sector police vehicle number and the 10111 call centre number when reporting crime.
“Preventing crime is a community responsibility and as such the DA ward 13 branch would like to invite communities to support the crime prevention initiative.”
Residents who wish to join the campaign are welcome to contact Sauls on 082-685-7951. SMS and Whatsapp messages are also welcome.
