Group promotes reading
The 23-year-old Ms Makunyane said they wanted to create a platform for young people to network, showcase their skills and knowledge.
About 40 young people gathered at Baruka’s Place in Ivory Park during the Ruzivo Rwedu Book Club session recently.
The founder of the book club, Ms Katlego Makunyane, partnered with her fiance Mr Phillip Mkhwanazi, to establish the book club for young people in Ivory Park.
The 23-year-old Ms Makunyane said they wanted to create a platform for young people to network, showcase their skills and knowledge.
“In our community, there are a lot of talented people who we do not always see. This is just to acknowledge them and to nurture the love of books so that it does not die,” she said.
She added they are aiming to decrease the number of youngsters on the street.
“I am hoping to see young people following their dreams. I want to see authors being groomed out of this programme. Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave,” she added.
The theme for the event was Dress for Success.
The group is currently reading Know Yourself, a motivational book written by Neleng Thomas Phele.
“We select just one book, read it and when finished, we review it,” she said.
The guest of honour was Mr Bongani Isaac Sibisi, the author of The Power of Mind.
The Ivory Park-based Mr Sibisi advised young people that they only need one book that will inspire them, to trigger a love for reading.
His message was, “A diamond goes through a process before it can shine, meaning it’s not easy to achieve your goals. You need to work hard and put extra work in and eventually you will get there”.
Ms Makunyane thanked Baruka’s Place’s owner, Mr Peter Khoza, for offering them a free venue.
“I also thank the young people who availed themselves for the discussions. We meet twice a month and we urge other people to join the group,” she said.
