FOUR male suspects were arrested in two separate incidents for cell phone robberies in Norkem Park on Thursday, November 19.
According to Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson, Capt Lesibana Molokomme, the first incident took place at around 3pm.
“Two suspects were arrested by Const Sekgobela and Const Maaga during social crime operation duties in Norkem Park. The officers were patrolling the area when they came across two suspects running down Pongola River Drive,” explained Molokomme.
Molokomme said the two suspects, aged 18 and 20, were brought to a halt.

“Upon searching them, police discovered a Blackberry cellphone valued at around R3 500. The suspects failed to provide any proof when questioned about the lawful owner. It was later discovered the two suspects had robbed a scholar wearing a uniform similar to Norkem Park High School. The scholar was nowhere to be found in order to open a case of robbery,” Molokomme said.
Molokomme said on the same day at around 3:30pm Const Maselela and Const Makgopa from the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) arrested two male suspects, both aged 18, for robbery. The suspects were arrested on the corner of Green Avenue and Panorama Street in Edleen.
“The female victim, aged 21, was walking along Green Avenue, talking on her cell phone when she was approached by the suspects who grabbed her and took her cell phone. The victim screamed, alerting the nearby metro police. They chased the suspects down and arrested them,” Molokomme explained.
The cell phone, a Samsung S6 Edge, valued at R15 000, was handed back to the lawful owner.
Norkem Park SAPS urges members of the community to avoid using cell phones in high crime areas to avoid such incidents.
