Paramedics face disciplinary action after ambulance ‘hijacking’

Disciplinary action has been instituted against the paramedics who reported the alleged “hijacking” of an ambulance while attending to a psychotic patient in Tembisa.

The MEC of Health in Gauteng, Ms Qedani Mahlangu, is dismayed and disappointed about the latest developments in the case of an alleged “hijacking” of an ambulance.

On December 31, 2015, a 35-year-old male patient allegedly drove off in an ambulance.

The Gauteng Department of Health‘s Media Liaison Officer Steve Mabona has since stated that disciplinary action has been instituted against the paramedics who reported the alleged “hijacking” of an ambulance while attending to a psychotic patient in Tembisa.

Media reported that on New Year’s eve, paramedics were hijacked at gunpoint while attending to a patient in Tembisa.

“According to the latest developments, it is alleged that the same psychotic patient drove off with the ambulance. An investigator has been appointed,” said Mr Mabona.

“We sincerely apologise for misleading the public.”

MEC Qedani Mahlangu said the paramedics know they are not allowed to leave ambulances unattended.

“Necessary corrective measures must be finalised,” said Mr Mabona.
