Robbers shoot father, wound daughter (4)

The deceased's four-year-old daughter was also shot in the stomach and is currently in hospital, in a stable condition.

A Tembisa businessman was shot and killed by house robbers at his home in Hospital View on February 12.

The man’s four-year-old daughter was also shot in the stomach and is currently in hospital, in a stable condition.

According to Mr Elias Masikela Manthata’s son, Thato Manthata, his father was returning from a funeral in Limpopo on the day of the incident.

Thato said his father arrived home at around 11pm and found his other son, David Manthata, sleeping in the lounge and told him to go to bed.

“At around 1pm I was sleeping in my room. My brother was also asleep. We then heard a scream from my father,” said Thato.

David said he went out to check and he found four men in front of the kitchen door.

“They were trying to break it down. They saw me coming out but they did not mind me, nor did they run. It was clear their intention was to get into the house. I was scared and I went back to my room,” said David.

He said they then heard their father screaming Thato’s name and that is when Thato woke up.

“I saw some of the guys going to the lounge. That’s where they broke the window and gained access into the house,” said Thato.

Thato said his father was with his girlfriend and his four-year-old sister.

“I started making calls to try and get help. I called an off duty police friend who called the police,” said Thato.

He said they heard three gunshots and then it was quiet for a while.

“When we rushed into the house to check, we saw traces of blood that led to my father’s bedroom. We found him lying face down and our four-year-old sister was facing up. They were both shot in the stomach,” said Thato.

According to Thato, his father had been shot twice in the stomach.

According to the father’s girlfriend, the killers demanded money. Thato’s father screamed that there was no money in the house.

The men took a flat screen television, a watch, a cellular phone and car keys.

“They jumped over the wall and fled. Our sister is in hospital. Our dad died on our driveway,” said Thato.

“Our father was a good person who helped a lot of aspiring business people,” said Thato.

Captain Manyadza Rhalidzhivha said a case of robbery and murder has been opened and the SAPS is investigating.
