Ms Dorothy Banda (62) was shot and killed during a house robbery in Esiphetweni during the early hours of Wednesday morning last week.
Her eldest son, Mr David Ndlovu, was also shot twice.
According to Mr Ndlovu, the two robbers first shot at him from outside the window of the backroom where his mother lived.
“At the time I wanted to protect my mother. She saw them first through the window and called for help. The robbers then shot the burglar door to gain entry.
“They took my plasma television and two cellular phones. On their way out, my mother wanted to close the burglar door but they turned and fired more shots. I was shot in my legs. My mother was shot three times in the chest. I think they wanted to kill me but my mother was in the wrong place and tried to protect me,” said Mr Ndlovu.
His heavily pregnant wife and four-year-old son escaped the robbery but are still traumatised following the incident.
“Some social workers came and offered help, so, we will go for counselling. My son is experiencing nightmares. He is deeply affected as he saw his grandmother lying dead in a pool of blood,” said Mr Ndlovu.
Ms Banda was certified dead at the scene.
It is believed Ms Banda travelled her home in Zimbabwe to look after her daughter-in-law as she is due to go into labour.
“Why didn’t they just take the television and leave us alone? She was an old woman who cannot fight back,” said Mr Ndlovu.
The Tembisa SAPS Cluster’s Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso said a case of house robbery and murder was opened.
“Nothing was recovered at the scene. The case is being investigated,” she said.
