Belly dancers showcase their moves
On Saturday evening, 22 students, aged six to 60, shook their hips for the audience
FIRE, swords, chiffon fabric and flexing torsos were the order of the day as students from Almeya’s Belly Dance Studio took to the Hoërskool Birchleigh stage to showcase their belly dance moves.
The annual student showcase was held on Saturday evening where 22 students, aged six to 60, shook their hips for the audience.
Belly dance is a non-impact, weight-bearing exercise suitable for all ages.
Almeya’s Belly Dance studio, based in Birchleigh, was founded in 2005 by Dawn Mey and Wilma Allan.
“The students have an opportunity at the showcase to show what they have learnt during the year,” explained Mey.
“Belly dance is for women, by women. It’s very feminine, fun, healthy and brings happiness,” pointed out Allan.
The women said there was a misconception about the dance and the truth was that it originated for child birth purposes, but is now used for fun and entertainment.
“Our classes are open to women of all ages. Women can expect to learn how to use and isolate their muscle groups, use different muscles and make friends with other women from different walks of life,” added Allan.
The two instructors met at a belly dance class and three years later started their school.
“We loved it so much we had to start a school,” said Mey.
