Exchange dog and cat food for the Super Animal Cards you need
One card can be exchanged for at least one tin of food
LEE Zerf (24), a Nimrod park resident and animal lover, started the initiative to exchange Pick n Pay Super Animal cards for dog and cat food.
Since she started the project on August 29, she has collect over 254kg dog food, 38kg cat food and 42 tins of food, as well as blankets, kitty litter and kitten milk .
“I never actually thought anything of these cards, until a colleague of mine gave me all her extra cards so I could swap them for Checkers minis I so badly wanted. Over the weekend of August 27 I spoke to a few people and got my idea from them that I should swap cat or dog food in exchange for the cards,” said Zerf.
Zerf explains that she doesn’t have specific requirements for all cards and that one card can be exchanged for at least one tin of food. If a person needs a few cards she asks them to donate a bag of cat or dog food.
Big 5 cards are exchanged for large bags of food between 4kg and 8kg as these cards are scarce.
“I’m not specific on brands and I’m certainly not doing this to hurt people’s pockets. These cards weren’t ‘free’ to begin with, and through me you get the exact card you want for a cheaper price and it’s not to benefit me but the animals,” adds Zerf.
Zerf has three pets of her own, a cat, a dog and a snake, and says helping the animals is important to her and she always wanted to make a difference and make a big donation to a shelter but never had the financial status to do so.
“I saw my chance and I took it. I love animals and this is the only way I can help the dogs and cats that don’t have ‘furever’ homes as I can’t adopt any at this stage.”
Any dog, cat or pet food can be donated or exchanged, as well as toys, blankets, balls, shampoo and the likes.
The project will run until October 5 and Zerf will donate the food and accessories to Kitty and Puppy Haven, Pug Rescue and Kempton Park Feral and Abandoned Cats on October 8.
