AS part of his 100 Day Programme, Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina plans on ‘cracking the whip’ on Kempton’s criminals and drug peddlers.
Masina made the announcement during a media briefing in Germiston on September 29, where he broke down the plans for his first 100 days in office, a programme which will set the tone for the new administration’s term of office in terms of service delivery.
One of the focus areas for the new team is addressing the high crime rates in the city’s hot spot towns – particularly the CBD areas of Kempton, Germiston and Boksburg.

When the EXPRESS asked the mayor to divulge more details of how he was planning on addressing the criminal activities in Kempton – which counts drug dealing and prostitution among its biggest problems – Masina said he couldn’t give any details as this could jeopardise law enforcement operations.
“Just like with any crime operations by the police, one cannot publicise details of the SAPS’s planned strategies and activities. But there are massive programmes planned to address the crime, such as the metro police’s Bumper to Bumper campaign which has been ongoing,” Masina explained.
Still on the subject of crime, a new EMPD precinct would also be opened in the Zonkizizwe area in Katlehong.
A new fire station for Kempton, along the Albertina Sisulu Corridor, is also in the pipeline.
“With development booming around the Aerotropolis catchment area, especially along the Albertina Sisulu Corridor, we shall proactively start building a new fire station worth about R30-million to deal with emergency and disaster threats in the area.”
In terms of the health sector, the mayor said he would be increasing the number of 24-hour clinics through an additional three more facilities by the first quarter of next year. Three more will then be added during the 2017/2018 financial year, which will make it a total of 15, 24-hour clinics in the metro.
Giving an update on his previously announced plans to launch a power station in Ekurhuleni, the ambitious Masina said they had already started with the procurement process towards the Independent Power Producer that will provide the metro’s residents with an additional 10% power, in order to augment the supply from Eskom.
