Online higher education soon to be available for Ekurhuleni

This innovation presents residents with an opportunity to do courses accredited by institutions like Yale and Stanford Universities

IN an effort to improve access to higher education for the youth; the Ekurhuleni metro will soon launch online learning courses.

The city will be extending its financial assistance to the youth, by increasing its bursary budget from R10 million to R100 million – giving full scholarships to deserving learners.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina made that announcement during a press briefing in Germiston on September 29.

Following in the footsteps of the City of Jo’burg, Ekurhuleni will soon launch massive open online courses (MOOC’s) – a facility that will turn the metro’s libraries into free institutions of higher learning.

“As we broaden access to higher education, a massive game-changer for the communities of Ekurhuleni will be unleashed in October. This innovation presents residents with an opportunity to do courses accredited by institutions like Yale and Stanford Universities,” Masina announced.

“We are aware of the needs of our young people who yearn for education and have a quest to advance their future prospects.”

Jo’burg rolled out its massive open online varsity (MOOV) e-learning programme in 2015, which is run under the city’s Vulindlel’ eJozi programme – a multi million-rand initiative that seeks to break down barriers to youth empowerment and employment opportunities. This year alone, Ekurhuleni awarded 848 deserving 2015 matric students with bursaries, in addition to the 403 students whose studies are already being funded by the municipality.
