SHOCKING VIDEO: Is this how Ekurhuleni is saving water?

'We need to put a stop to this crisis! What will happen if our dams dry up?'

FARADAY Street in Chloorkop is regularly being flooded due to water gushing from a reservoir on the same street.

Resident Madelyn Smith spoke to EXPRESS this morning and said the problem had been going on for months now on a regular basis.

In a video taken on Monday morning water was streaming down the road like a river. This would continue for hours before the metro would step it.

“Is this how Ekurhuleni is saving water? This problem at the reservoir has been ongoing for the past six years, with thousands of litres of water being wasted, running down the street for hours on end,” said Smith.

Smith and fellow residents have contacted the City of Ekurhuleni’s Water and Sanitation Department numerous times to no avail. There is also no security present at the reservoir to keep an eye on the problem.

“We call the department immediately every time we see water is running again but all we get is a reference number and we wait up to four hours before they actually turn off the water. While water is gushing out of the reservoir water pressure in our homes is non-existent.”

Residents have worked together to try and collect as much water as possible in buckets and containers but they do not have enough.

“Our yards are destroyed by all the water but most of all, our hearts break to see water being wasted like this. We need to put a stop to this crisis! What will happen if our dams dry up?”
