Mayor to address protesting Tembisa community

The community's main grievances are credit control and the billing system

Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, will be meeting protesters in Tembisa’s Phomolong section at 4pm to hear their grievances.

Phomolong residents blockaded all main streets with stones and burning tyres since the early hours of this morning.

Mayoral spokesman, Zweli Dlamini, says the mayor is scheduled to address an Imbizo in Tembisa at 5pm today but has decided to attend to the grievances of the protesters first before addressing the Imbizo.

The Tembisan earlier reported that Phomolong Section’s residents blockaded all the main streets with stones and burning tyres at 2am this morning.

The police and metro police responded quickly to secure Phomolong Customer Service Centre from potential vandalism. Several rubber bullets were fired at the protesting community.

Thomas Mabye, one of the protest leaders, said the community had a mass meeting on Sunday and decided to protest.

“This protest is a follow-up strike to our previous strike on November 30 last year. Last year the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) handed a memorandum of grievances to the City of Ekurhuleni but until today we haven’t received the municipality’s response,” said Maybe.

The community’s main grievances are credit control and the billing system, which they believe is fraudulent. They also demand immediate electricity for houses without.
