Firemen ready to deal with fires during water shedding

In extreme cases, water will be taken from the nearest open water sources

EKURHULENI’S fire emergency services assure residents they will be able to deal with fires during periods of water shedding, which occur from 9pm to 5am.

William Ntladi, emergency services spokesman, said contingency plans were in place to remedy the situation should the need arise.

“The municipal water department has been engaged and is on standby for intervention as and when required. The two departments are in constant consultation and collectively working together to eliminate any potential challenges,” Ntladi said.

The schedule as communicated to all departments and officials will simultaneously be activated to remedy any water shortages during structural fires in affected areas. This is to enhance effective firefighting operations, he added.

“Fire stations and fire engines have the water shedding schedule on board and on notice boards. All water tankers and foam tenders are constantly ready to respond as a district to fire related incidents.”

In extreme cases, water will be taken from the nearest open water sources around the city to shuttle water to the required fire scenes. Structural facilities with water reservoirs are also being identified to assist during fire operations.

Ntladi added that the emergency services were on high alert for any eventualities that might erupt as a result.

Communities affected by fire-related incidents are advised to contact the call centre immediately to render swift intervention.
