Mosia and Sibeko reign supreme in Selekane Challenge

Tembisa Golf Club hosted this event in partnership with Mr Billy Selekane, who is the sole sponsor of this betterball golfing event.

The fourth annual Josiah Selekane Golf Challenge saw 72 golfers taking to the field in the final shoot out of the 2016 calendar year.

Tembisa Golf Club hosted this event in partnership with Mr Billy Selekane, who is the sole sponsor of this betterball golfing event.

Golf was however not the only winner on the day as funds were also raised to assist Selekane with his charity projects.

Speaking to Tembisa Golf Club members, Mr Benjamin Monyanyedi, chairperson and captain of Tembisa Golf Club, said the event was well sponsored and charities also stand to benefit thanks to this partnership.

Golfers from Tembisa Ekasi, Alexandra, Katlehong and surrounding areas came to participate in this ever-growing golfing shoot out, which is hosted in celebration and in honour of one of the founder members of Tembisa Golf Club, Mr Josiah Selekane.

Mr Jerry Mosia and Mr Colin Sibeko, who hail from Katlehong but are currently Tembisa Golf Club members, proved too strong for the elite field which included some of the cream of the crop of the game.

With the likes of Makati and partner, Mazibuko and partner and Oupa Shibambo and partner, it would have been expected that the winner would have come from among these players.

However, the current club champion, Mosia, and his partner, Sibeko, shut the door on everyone, including pre-tournament favourites, to be crowned the champions of the 2016 Josiah Selekane Golf Challenge.

It was no surprise too that Sipho Sidu and Themba Mazwi took the second spot honours after pipping yet another formidable pair, Mporo Mathiyase and Boza Dlamini, on a count down, leaving them in third place.

The highlight of the day was Mporo Mathiyase’s three birdies within a four-hole stretch of the 13th, then 15th and 16th which included a chip in at the awkwardly placed pin at the 15th.

Monyanyedi said the game has improved in Tembisa.

“Although the winners are lads from Katlehong, they are full members of Tembisa Golf Club and ply their trade week in and week out with Tembisa golfers.

“It is good for us as our youngsters are able to take cues from some of the great golf that is displayed every week that the club hosts an event.

“It was also once again refreshing to have four development players participating in this event, with the likes of Mayo Dimo who had a nightmarish first nine with probably just one par then coming back in the second nine to shoot a solid one under par 35 on his own.”

Mr Monyanyedi added that the future of the game looks good as long as they continue having sons of the soil from Tembisa coming on board and assisting in an obviously challenging sport, both mentally and materially.

“We have bid 2016 goodbye with this major event and are all looking forward to Mafikeng at Easter.”
