Be careful during flooding
Flooding occurs when water overflows its normal channels such as streams and storm water drain systems.

Following heavy downpours experienced across the City of Ekurhuleni since the night of January 7, the City’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) urged residents to be aware of possible flooding.
Flooding occurs when water overflows its normal channels such as streams and storm water drain systems.
It occurs also when there is a prolonged period of rain, with continuous heavy falls or in the form of flash floods which are usually associated with severe thunderstorms.
Heavy rain can also result in rivers, low-lying bridges, open trenches, furrows and even canals flooding, causing damage to down-streams areas.
DEMS, in collaboration with the South African Weather Services (SAWS), caution residents to stay indoors and off the roads.
People should also avoid crossing low-lying bridges and swollen streams where the water is above ankle level.
Baptism in rivers and open water streams is dangerous during such weather.
Tips:
- In buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.
- Switch off electricity at the supply point to the building.
- In rural areas, protect/relocate animals to a safe place on higher ground.
- Abandon your home immediately if evacuation is recommended, before access is cut off by flood water.
- Never drive on a road covered by flood water. You do not know how deep it is or if the road has been washed away.
- If the vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground.
- Be extra vigilant at night when it’s harder to recognise flood dangers.
Communities affected by flooding or any life threatening emergencies are advised to call the Emergency Call Centre immediately to render swift intervention.
In case of emergencies, call the direct line on 011 458-0911.
Alternatively, dial 112 from a cellphone or use the national emergency number of 10177.
Ensure that you have the emergency call centre contact numbers readily and clearly displayed for everyone to know and to use.
Numbers should be saved and easy to access on your telephone or cellular phone.
Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.
Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.
Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
