Mystery surrounds man’s shooting death in Rhodesfield

His car crashed into a pole without him inside

A Rhodesfield ext 1 resident was playing with her dog in her yard on Monday when something she can only describe as “very insane” occurred.

The resident, who lives on Mary Bailey Road, was outside training her puppy at about 6pm when she heard a very loud ‘pop’ sound.

“But I didn’t make anything of it and carried on with my dog. Then a couple of seconds later I saw a car rolling down our street.”

The car, a white Renault Clio, came to a stop when it hit a street pole.

“I immediately told my partner to send an alert out on our community forum group. We went outside to check what was going on.”

The couple found no one was inside the car and all the doors were closed.

When the couple looked up the street, they saw a man lying on his side in the middle of the road in a pool of blood. A woman was already approaching him to see what’s going on.

“The woman who got there first was already assessing him for a pulse, which was still there although it was very weak,” the resident described.

“I don’t want to confirm anything but it looked like he had a gunshot wound on his back.”

Everyone at the scene started calling frantically for help from paramedics and police.

“Some time went by and no one arrived. My partner then raced to the fire station, coming back with the fire brigade.”

A short while later, the ambulance arrived at the scene.

“When paramedics assessed the man, they found he had already died.”

Police officers arrived soon after the paramedics.

The resident said the woman who was on the scene first checked through the deceased’s phone and found his wife’s number. She contacted her and his wife said she was on Barbara Road on her way to the scene.

As soon as the scene had been taken over by the police, the woman and her partner returned home as the children were alone.

Kempton police spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, confirmed that a case of murder is being investigated.

“The man sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body. The motive of the shooting is still unknown,” Mtshali said.

Investigations are underway and police urge anyone with information to contact the police on 011 393 8600 or 08600 10111. Alternatively, send an SMS to 32211.
