Ivory Park SAPS opened an inquest after a 38-year-old man from Clayville, Midrand, allegedly shot his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.
The Ivory Park SAPS members were called to the scene at the couple’s home on Sunday night after neighbours heard gunshots.
“Upon their arrival at the address police found the couple lying in a pool of blood. The woman told the police that she had been shot by her boyfriend who, at the time the police arrived, showed no signs of life. He was certified dead at the scene by the paramedic. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment. A case of attempted murder is also being investigated,” says the Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane.
The Station Commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, was deeply disturbed by this incident, as it happened hours after another woman was allegedly shot and injured by her boyfriend at the nearby Kaalfontein.
“These shootings by intimate partners are a harsh reminder of the need for the community to watch out for each other, as relatives, co-tenants, colleagues and neighbours are probably the first people to be aware of its existence,” said Brigadier Ngcobo.
The police are appealing to residents to be vigilant about reporting all incidents of domestic violence to them so that the victims can be contacted and be fully informed of their rights and the options available to them in line with the Domestic Violence Act.
