Mess left behind as BMW goes up in flames in Terenure

‘Why have a call centre with automated call routing only to say you have to hold for the next operator who then promptly picks up the phone and then disconnects you?’

THE mess left behind in front of his house after a BMW X5 went up in flames in the street on May 23, has a Terenure resident fuming.

Finding it difficult to get hold of someone at the metro to assist him with some answers, Willem Liebenberg of Eagle Road eventually approached Kempton Express, saying, “… at this moment I think the freedom of the press is our only hope of surviving the ANC incompetence and corruption”.

Although the burnt out car was removed the same night, he woke up the next morning and found fire debris such as shattered glass, wire from the burnt out tyres, ashes from the fire, molten lead and aluminium still there.

According to Liebenberg they heard huge explosions shortly after 6pm.

“On inspection we found a BMW X5 burning in the street. We called the fire department. They parked 50 metres away because of the explosions,” he said.

He said during the explosions he saw the tank blow and the spare wheel was blown through the rear tailgate door.

“The flames were six metres high and burnt the tree on my sidewalk. We could not get out of our property.”

By the time the fire was out, what remained of the car was removed.

Finding the debris on the road outside the next morning, Liebenberg decided to try and find somebody at the metro to assist.

“On contacting, or should I say attempting to, most numbers just rang endlessly. Why have a call centre with automated call routing only to say you have to hold for the next operator who then promptly picks up the phone and then disconnects you?

“The Ekurhuleni staff hate their jobs, are incompetent and untrained. As I was composing this e-mail, there were people from the electricity department following my complaint for refuse removal in the street. The call centre filed an electricity disconnection problem. God help us. Ekurhuleni is a joke,“ he added.

Liebenberg eventually removed the debris himself, which weighed 70kg.
