Driver bust with drugs worth R100 000 in Birchleigh North

Police established something was wrong when the driver replied 'let's talk' when they asked permission to search his vehicle

SAPS undercover officers arrested a motorist who was transporting drugs worth R100 000, hidden in the metal frames of mini braai stands, in Birchleigh North, at around 6pm on Friday.

The officers, who were in an unmarked SAPS Provincial Narcotics Investigation Unit vehicle, made the arrest on Baxter Street after establishing that the suspect was hiding something. He apparently told the officers “let’s talk” when they asked permission to search the vehicle.

Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson Capt Lesibana Molokomme said Sgt Mapitso Brown and Sgt Tebogo Moeketsi spotted the suspicious Nissan Almera on Mooifontein Road in Norkem Park and followed it to Birchleigh North, where they made the arrest.

The drugs were bound with sellotape and shoved into the metal frames of 14 mini braai stands. The drugs will be submitted to SAPS forensic officers to confirm if they are ephedrine, as suspected.

The 30-year-old suspect appeared in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on charges of drug possession and drug dealing.
