Trigger-happy business robbers chased down and busted in Birchleigh

The six men robbed a business on Commissioner Street in the Kempton Park CBD and fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum.

RESIDENTS witnessed a movie-like action scene when six armed business robbers were chased from Kempton Park CBD to Birchleigh on Thursday night.

The suspects robbed a business on Commissioner Street of money and cigarettes and fled the scene with CCTV equipment in the hope of eliminating evidence but SSS Security was swift to call in the robbery.

Birchleigh CPF and Neighbourhood Watch member Shawn Wright heard the alert and immediately drove to block the fleeing taxi at the Elgin Road  circle in Birchleigh, as he heard the Toyota Quantum was headed in the direction of Olifantsfontein on Pretoria Road.

“When I arrived at the circle, I saw the taxi with six men inside making its way to Birchleigh. I chased the taxi as they kept firing shots in my direction but I was relentless.

“They opened the sliding door but I drove closer to make it impossible for them to jump out. As we kept making turns, three of the suspects jumped out and disappeared. I continued to chase the taxi and noticed the driver did not know where he was.

“I informed some of my colleagues on a WhatsApp group to close Birchleigh exists and fortunately there was a Norkem Park SAPS van nearby. The officers saw I was in pursuit and switched on their blue lights. The taxi driver stopped and two of the other suspects jumped out and ran for it. They were busted by a member of the AfriForum GRE. Soon there were officers from various security companies and police stations, including Tembisa SAPS,” said Wright.

Norkem Park SAPS spokesperson Capt Lesibana Molokomme said,”The three suspects were arrested around 7.20pm and found in possession of a box of cigarettes, money taken from the business, CCTV equipment and a magazine from a firearm.”

Kempton Park SAPS informed EXPRESS that it ha been discovered that the taxi was registered to a taxi association in Mamelodi, Pretoria.
