Taxi strike leaves commuters stranded, major roads blocked

Reports that routes are already blocked, are coming through on Twitter

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) advised commuters to seek alternative transport on Thursday morning as its members will embark on a strike against “high minibus taxi purchase costs”.

Motorists can expect slow traffic flow on numerous routes, including the R21, which is one of four highways expected to be affected by the strike.

Reports that routes are already blocked, are coming through on Twitter. Protest action is taking place on N1 Northbound and Southbound at the Allandale interchange. All lanes are closed and motorist must seek alternative routes, iTraffic (GP) tweeted..

Although Tshwane Metro Police said they did not approve the strike and considered it to be an illegal one, SANTACO’s demonstration goes ahead.

The Gauteng bus service has also been suspended.

According to SANTACO spokersperson Ralph Jones, members will hand over a memorandum of grievances to the directors of SA Taxi Finance Company in Midrand because some of its members have been hard hit by the high interest rate of 28 per cent on their vehicle finance.
