Tembisa entrepreneurs revive proms

Matric dance goes back to the glamour it was years ago.

Finishing matric is the most important step in a teenager’s life and when they look back on the year they want to have wonderful memories to cherish.

Michael ‘Chicco’ Sibindi and Sweetness Kobeni feel parents and the graduating learners must put a lot of effort in organising exclusive and memorable matric dance events as a farewell from the schooling years. A matric dance is an equivalent of the United States’ promenade dance, most commonly called a prom.

The two business partners say matric dance events have lost their essence because learners nowadays take part in the events to splash money on alcohol, which should never be the case. According to the internet, a prom is a semi-formal dance or gathering of high school learners. It is further explained that at the prom there are honorary titles that are awarded to students elected in a school-wide vote prior to the prom, and seniors are usually awarded these titles.

Sweetness said the matric dance events in South African schools are not even sticking to dress codes or the set themes. “There is not even an actual dance. In prom culture, a guy needs to ask a lady out to the dance event by exchanging a ribbon similarly to an African culture where beads are exchanged to show interest in two parties. If the lady agrees to go with him to the event they can, therefore, look forward to an actual dance. The ribbon makes the girl feel special too,” said Sweetness. She said all that is now gone and the events are no longer a special night for graduating students.

The duo came together to look into how they can bring back the meaning of a matric dance in creating glamorous matric dance events to make it special for all learners in different Tembisa schools. “Proms are also preparing the soon be young adults for the professional/corporate world by providing motivational speakers who will build their self-esteem. M&S Proms aims to bring classy matric dances to all Tembisa schools and recognising the hard work of learners by recognising their achievements on the prom night. Enlisting the services of M&S Proms will expose the schools and remain a memory to be documented by the school and learners themselves,” said the partners.

She said M&S Proms encourages responsible behavior among the learners and said parents must rest assured that safety is guaranteed at prom events offered by M&S Proms. Michael said he hopes that M&S Proms will grow and stage the best prom for his siblings too one day. “We are offering a once in a lifetime experience and creating memories learners will never forget”. They promise red carpet and limousine drop-off services for schools.
