On July 5 last year this was the top news in Kempton
ONE suspect has been arrested and a manhunt has been launched for four other men following the shooting of a police officer, as well as a woman, in Pomona on Tuesday evening.
The 36-year-old officer was injured in a shoot-out between police and five men on the corner of Maple and Constantia streets. During the shoot-out, a female bystander was also wounded.
According to Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, the incident occurred after the officer had stopped the five men as part of a routine search operation.

“At about 7.15pm, Kempton police’s crime prevention unit members were patrolling in the Pomona area when they spotted a suspicious looking silver VW POLO with about five occupants,” Mtshali explained.
“They pulled the car over and it is alleged one occupant got out of the Polo with a firearm in his hand and shot at the police without warning.”
A shoot-out ensued between the police and the men. The police immediately called for back-up.

During the shooting, a police sergeant sustained a bullet wound to his leg and a female bystander was also wounded. The patients were both taken to hospital in a stable condition, Mtshali confirmed.
According to ER24, the officer was transported to a hospital in Benoni for further medical care.
“Police managed to arrest one suspect in his late 30s. All other suspects fled the scene and police have launched a manhunt to find them.”
Two police vehicles were damaged by bullets during the incident. It was also discovered the VW Polo the men were travelling in had been reported stolen in Cleveland in May.
Police investigations continue.
