Two killed, 20 injured as taxi crashes into truck in Germiston

The road was closed for the duration of the operations and the scene was handed over to the metro police.

Two minibus taxi occupants were killed and 20 others injured in a four-vehicle pile-up on Rand Airport Road in Germiston on Monday morning.

William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni emergency services, said the accident occurred occurred just before 7am.

“A rescue team and paramedics from Germiston Central Fire Station responded to a the accident involving two taxis, a hatchback and an articulated truck,” Ntladi said.

Three front passengers and the driver from one taxi were trapped inside the wreckage. Rescuers had to use hydraulic rescue tools to recover them.

“The driver and one female passenger, who were both trapped, were declared dead on the scene.”

Four other passengers sustained critical injuries.. Sixteen other people, including those from the second minibus, sustained serious to minimal injuries and all were transported by various ambulance services to various medical facilities around the City of Ekurhuleni.Ntladi said it is believed one minibus taxi was trying to overtake a truck, which was turning, and crashed into it before other vehicles were involved in the pile-up.
