WATCH: Fundraiser for miracle baby Mienke (1) from Benoni
The life of a little girl (1) will never be the same, after she nearly choked to death at a daycare centre.
A fundraiser will be held on Saturday (August 18) for a one-year-old baby from Benoni who suffered severe brain damage when she choked on milk at a daycare centre in Mbombela, Nelspruit, last year August.
The incident happened shortly after the Mulder family moved from Benoni to Mbombela. Little Mienke was dubbed a miracle baby after, despite doctors declaring her dead, she survived the chocking.
“Her mother Verna begged the doctors to try and resuscitate her,” said Monique van Rooyen from Pearl Drop Moments, the online Christian platform that will host the event. “After 15 minutes, it worked.”
Mienke was without oxygen for 30 minutes and was diagnosed by doctors with cerebral palsy, a disorder of muscle tone which means she needs 24-hour care.
The Lowvelder, which regularly reported on Mienke’s progress, stated that she is unable to recognise what she sees and also has to relearn to sit, suck and balance her head.
Following the ordeal, the Mulder family has since moved back to Benoni, where Mienke’s two older sisters returned to their former pre-school.
To help Mienke’s parents with her medical expenses, residents can attend the fundraising breakfast on August 18 from 8.30am to 12.30pm at Birchwood Hotel at 14 View Point Road, Boksburg.
Guests will be treated to a gospel performance by Chantelle Dall, a testimony from Mienke’s mother and two more speakers.
A market selling Mienke products will be available and prizes will also be up for grabs.
Tickets sell for R200 per person, which includes breakfast and a hot beverage. Group tables can also be booked for R2 000 each.
If you want to buy a ticket or get involved in decorating the tables, email Monique at moniquevr@pearldropmoments.co.za.
Please note that no card facilities will be available on the day.
