Modderfontein golf women raise funds for those in need
“We decided to assist Door of Hope because the work they do is close to our hearts.”
Close to 60 women took to the field at Modderfontein Golf Club to support the Door of Hope Children’s Mission.
The Golf with a Purpose charity day collected donations and raised funds and awareness for the mission, which focuses on caring for abandoned babies.
It was organised and hosted by the women’s section of Modderfontein Golf Club on Women’s Day, August 9.
Committee member of the women’s section Zahn Rossouw said this was the first charity event hosted by the club’s women. She said only women participated in the event.
They hoped to unite women and celebrate them in addition to helping the charity. Zahn said it was hosted in memory of those who fought the struggle for women’s rights.
“We decided to assist Door of Hope because the work they do is close to our hearts. All our members are either mothers or grandmothers themselves, so we thought it would be a good idea to assist Door of Hope.”
A week before the fund-raiser, a newborn baby was found in a wheelie bin on Seventh Avenue in Edenvale. In shock, community members took to social media to express their concerns.
Zahn said the work the mission does aims to reduce the number of children abandoned in bins or elsewhere. She said the mission cares for the babies until the age of two after which they are either adopted or placed in a foster home.
“I feel that society is often quick to condemn or criticise a mother who abandons their child. We don’t always know the circumstances why the mother abandoned their child. Sometimes we need to be more empathetic.”
Zahn said the community and golfers responded well to the event.
